now with extraordinary savings come in to save or log on now. a national tragedy. the nation of poland is in shock today after a devastating plane crash takes the lives of the polish president, first lady and many of the country's highest leaders. good evening, i'm pat lawson muse. craig melvin is off tonight. the poland's president was one of 90 killed this morning. the airliner ran into bad weather in skies above russia. tom aspell has the story. >> reporter: the fuselage 154 airplane crashed in thick fog a mile short of smolensk airport in russia killing all 96 onboard

including polish president lech kaczynski and his wife maria. >> i think the whole world will be saddened and in sorrow as a result of this tragic death and the plane crash of president kaczynski and his wife and the party with them. i think we know the difficulties poland has gone through, the sacrifices he, himself, made as part of the solidarity movement and the fight for independence and freedom of poland. >> reporter: localle officials said the airplane caught fire after it hit the ground. rescue teams tried to pull people out of the wreckage, but there were no survivors. they were going to a memorial service to commemorate russia and poland victims murdered by soviet forces during world war ii. initial reports suggested pilot error may have caused the crash. russian officials said because of fog the pilot was advised to

proceed to minsk. tom aspell, nbc news. poland is now in a national period of mourning. there's been an outpouring of grief from the local polish community, as well. many converged on the embassy here in northwest washington today. derrick ward has that story. >> reporter: they began showing up at the front gate of the polish embassy on 15th street early in the morning. for some the connection was ancestr ancestral, for others recent. >> we lost a great president. i know what will happen now and i hope they will do now the right thing. >> reporter: the loss of the president, first lady, top military. it seemed unfathomable for many in this country. >> president kaczynski

represented the generation of freedom, freedom connected permanently with the legacy of the solidarity movement. >> reporter: midday the embassy opened a book of condolences. >> this would have been like losing obama, biden, pelosi and head of the sab net secretary on that day. >> reporter: if that day was memorial day. they were on their way to commemorate the massacre of 20,000 polish officers on the orders of josef stalin 70 years ago. th >> now again we lost our leaders going to that place and that event. it's very ironic. >> that's a long, long time. most of us lost our familyies.

>> reporter: derrick ward, news4. >> embassy spokesmen say well-wishers can go to the embassy on 16th street to sign a book of condolences. hope has turned to sorrow for the families of four missing miners in west virginia. the men's bodies were found late last night. law enforcement paid tribute to the victims who were carried in a parade of ambulances. in all, 29 people died in the mine explosion, making it the worst u.s. mining disaster in this country in 40 years. today's devastating news of the miners' fate rattled the closely knit community. >> it's a heavy-hearted community holding on to a fragile thread of hope. when that thread broke, the pain was excrutiating. >> we did not receive the miracle we prayed for. this journey has ended.

now the healing will start. >> that was west virginia governor joe manchin. president obama demanded accountability and a thorough investigation into the explosion. georgetown university is on alert this evening after a female student was sexually assaulted yesterday in her dorm. news4's darcy spencer is live the at georgetown with more on an incident that left students there very much on edge. darcy? >> reporter: hi, pat. students tell me this incident happened in what's considered to be a very secure dorm building. they say, in fact, you have to swipe your student i.d. to get inside. oftentimes there's security posted at the door. on the campus of georgetown university, police are investigating the report of a sexual assault. police say a student was attacked inside a resident's hall about 6:00 friday night. >> that can happen.

>> it's definitely very scary. i lived here all the time. this is my home. i have friends here. >> reporter: it happened at copley hall. the victim left her door room and headed toward the basement when a man she didn't know followed her. the attacker said, "hey girl," grabbed her from behind and pushed her against the wall. he put one hand over the student's mouth and the other up her shirt. the victim was able to push him and run away. >> i would say copley is probably one of the safest places to live if you go to georgetown. it's i right in the center of campus. there's tons of security. there is a security guard at the door. you have to swipe it and have access to get in only if you live in that dorm can you get in. >> reporter: over the past couple of years there's been about a dozen such attacks by the georgetown cuddler on campus. students are once again on guard.

>> i think just being in the vicinity of a big city like this, it's going to see crime like that. overall, i mean, i hope it's not a pattern that progresses. i think georgetown is taking steps to do something. >> reporter: the students were notified about this crime through a campuswide alert. police say no arrest has been made and they already have a very vague description of this attacker. reporting live from georgetown, darcy spencer, news4. back to you. >> thanks, darcy. still ahead tonight on news4, a night out turns violent for some party-goers. there were shots fired killing a woman and seriously injuring on person. plus nearly two dozen thrill seekers find themselves stuck 200 feet above the ground. is there a sushi gene? researchers say sushi is better for some people than others. justin, what's up tonight? >> terrific weather to start the weekend today. if you thought today was nice, wait until you see tomorrow's

an overnight fire in montgomery county put one fire fighter in the hospital. the blaze consumed this house on lakestone place in rockville after 12:30 this morning. investigators say the flames started upstairs then engulfed the house within ten minutes. the people who live there did get out safely. one firefighters was hospitalized for minor injuries. the blaze did an estimated $1 million in damage. prince george's county police are investigating a deadly shooting near a night club. this happened around 2:00 this morning on suitland road in camp springs. a man and woman were shot. the woman died from her injuries this afternoon. police have not released the names of the victims. they're still looking for a suspect in the case and a motive. d.c. mayor adrian fenty is kicking his campaign for re-election into high gear. >> today is a day to marshal the troops to get excited, knocking on doors, standing at the metro,

reminding people that tough decision-making is the only way to go if you really want real change. >> the mayor today opened his re-election campaign headquarters on georgia avenue northwest. fenty is in for a tough race in the september democratic primary. a clarist research poll showed fenty with a 40 miss disapproval rating. still to come tonight, are some people genetically predisposed to eating sushi? we'll explore that question. we know you're loving this weather. there is change in the wind.

22 people visiting an amusement park had to be rescued from the top of a ride. authorities in belgium say a mechanical failure stopped the ride 200 feet in the air yesterday. those riders were stuck for three hours before firemen were able to get them down. it was a brand-new ride. just opened last week. april 1st was the deadline for mailing back your census forms, but there's another big deadline coming in less than a week. today volunteers canvassed some prince george's county neighborhoods where census officials say the return rate for those forms has been lagging. most of those areas have large numbers of renters and immigrants.

census officials say people who don't mail back their questionnaires by april 16th can expect a census representative to show up at their doors beginning in may. >> we're looking at all the areas that have not been quick to respond. please send it back. it doesn't matter that the april 1st deadline has passed. if you have it, send it back. if not, you will get another one. if not, you will then get people knocking on your door. >> the census results help determine how the government passes out more than $400 billion every year. sushi may be considered an acquired taste, but there's a new study suggesting certain people are actually born to eat sushi. researchers in france studied the genes in nori, the sea weed used to wrap raw sushi rolls. they found the same nori genes in the stomach bacteria of 13 japanese people. they didn't find the same

seaweed genes in any american studies they studied. all the sushi probably caused their bodies to add the genes to pull more nutrients from the seaweed. the cherry blossom parade kicked off this morning on constitution avenue, much to the delight of all the folks who lined the parade route. marching bands and balloons and all kinds of entertainment dazzles the crowds. cherry blossom festival wraps up this weekend. what a weekend it's been and what a day for a festival. justin, how's the rest of the weekend looking? >> yes, perfect weather. great way to wrap up the cherry blossom festival. we'll do things better tomorrow to get our high temperatures warmer than today. clear skies. we cannot find any clouds outside. just abundant sunshine.

mid 60s is our average high. chilly this morning as we did start off at 43 degrees at national airport. it's the coldest low temperature since march 28th, palm sunday. we had a low temperature of 38 in national. nice rebound making it back up to 66 degrees. elsewhere the lows across the region did make it down into the mid 30s across the virginia piedmont down toward manassas and culpeper. we did have low temperatures around 36. frederick checked in at 34 this morning. may have been a few areas of patchy frost outside. other low temperatures, damascus had a low of 34 this morning. germantown 36 degrees. even fredericksburg got in on the action. just one degree above the freezing mark at 33 degrees this morning. current check on the air temperatures right now, not bad. looking at upper 60s. towards the bay, anne arundel county 64 down toward paxtuxent

river. clear skies will allow our temperatures to drop down to the 30s across virginia and shenandoah valley. is there a frost advisory in effect for the counties shaded in blue. tender vegetation you have, you may want to cover them or bring them inside if you can. air temperatures are going to be critical with maybe frost potential there. high pressure over the mid-atlantic allowing skies to clear out nicely. all the clouds moving off to the north. that high situated just to our east of us across north carolina. that tie going to provide more of a southwest wind tomorrow. what that means is milder air starting to move back in. enjoy your sunday. just another great day to be outside. we'll be talking about the next cold front slowly making its way southward as we move into sunday night into monday. i think it should come through dry. expect clouds with it. then once the front passes, we'll see another shot of cooler air for the mid week.

pleasant and cool tonight. 60s falling through the 50s. overnight lows will make it down to the mid 30s in the cool spots. mid 40s around town. for sunday, mostly sunny, upper 60s to mid 70s for the high temperatures. a warm day for sunday. we'll go to the seven day and talk about the next cooldown. that occurs on monday. upper 60s with clouds around. tuesday looks to be the coolest day at 63. by wednesday and thursday, we slowly climb back up to near average in the mid 60s. then by the end of the week, we are going to be talking about temperatures, upper 60s to 70. next best chance for any showers holds off until friday. right now those chances are looking small. nice forecast, very dry. >> we love it. thank you. in sports tonight, records were meant to be broken. alex and the caps keep the shattering those records.

it's been a really good weekend so far for the local team. >> an unusual 24 hours. wizards win, capitals win and the nationals win today. >> because our fingers have been crossed or something like that. >> exactly. nationals are making progress. last season it took them 12 gas to get two victories. this season just five games in, the nats already have two wins. plus progress in the pitching department. opening day starter john landon
